The “new” look is gender neutral. It can also be called androgynous. The 1980’s gave us an androgynous look, but it had little in common with the one we are seeing now. The look of the 1980’s had a gender swapping tilt, as opposed to today’s version, which is closer to a gender-neutral idea. Men and women are wearing the same articles of clothing. Clothes exhibiting this trend are constructed with not one gender in mind, but with a single form. Unisex clothing creates a look that blurs the line between male and female stereotypes.
Fashion is a product of our values, art forms, behaviour, attitudes and cultural mores. I would like to ask you a question and would appreciate you posting your thoughts and comments. What does this new trend say about us? Lately we have been bombarded with extreme stereotypes of what it is to be masculine and feminine. We have Channing Tatums and Megan Foxes all over the pages of our magazines, on the silver screen and on the world’s runways. Is this gender-neutral look a fashion fad that will be out next season or is it a trend that will stay with us for a little while? Will it have any effect on society’s polarized gender roles, and, if so, do you think it will have a positive or negative impact on our society?

I find it more than likely that this ambiguity is a direct result of overt and overly feminine and masculine modes of attire. The growing trend to blur our culturally relative lines between men and women’s fashion is fresh and sexy. I think that people who where gender-neutral clothing are sexy because, not only is it fashion forward, it is question begging.

Society has, unfortunately, typecast us by gender, limiting choices in many ways. It is time to rethink the stereotypes and bravo to anyone who will lead the way.
